Join us for the rescheduled LIVE ONLINE Targeted Therapies Forum

September 12, 2020 Register Now!

The health and safety of our staff, faculty and patient community is our highest priority. Therefore, the Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education had made the difficult decision to postpone our annual Targeted Therapies Forum, originally scheduled for March 28 in Boston, until early fall due to the current COVID-19 outbreak. We are pleased to confirm the LIVE ONLINE Targeted Therapies Forum will be September 12, 2020.

Due to travel bans and health risk concerns, rescheduling this event will enable us to ensure an experience that all participants expect and deserve in a safe environment. We are pleased with and believe you will agree our online platform will be user friendly and a great experience for all of us.

We are eager to have you join us for this highly anticipated annual livestreamed event which features the top oncologists in their field presenting the most current and emerging information in targeted therapies and answering patient questions in real time. The rescheduled event will be September 12, 2020. More details will be forthcoming, and your registration will automatically be applied to the rescheduled event; there is no need to re-register.

Registration remains open at this time and as more information becomes available we will notify you.

The latest information about our Targeted Therapies Forum will always be available at www.cancergrace.org.

Meet the 2025 Patient Education Ambassadors!

GRACE is pleased to announce the acceptance of four rising stars into the 7th year of the GRACE Patient Education Ambassadors Program for the 2025-26 Program Year!

Applications for this program are open in March every year. To be notified when applications for this program open, please email Amy Bickleman, Executive Director, at abickleman@cancergrace.org to be added to the notification list.

All four candidates have shown a genuine passion for patient education and innovation in connecting with the patient community. The program will encompass the participants creating content which will be featured on the GRACE website, working alongside GRACE faculty, Board, and staff, and learning the most current and effective communication skills needed to succeed at connecting and communicating with patients in their field. The program starts on July 1, 2025, and ends on June 30, 2026. We are excited to work with them over the next year to continue to educate cancer patients on the most current and emerging treatment options. Watch for new videos, articles, and podcasts featuring the passions that these four amazing fellows have to share with the community!

Dr. Chinmay T. Jani

Dr. Chinmay T. Jani is a Hematology-Oncology Fellow at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System. He completed his medical education at Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College in India, followed by an Internal Medicine residency and Chief Residency at Mount Auburn Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Jani's clinical and translational research centers on Thoracic and Genitourinary Oncology with a strong focus on experimental and biomarker-driven therapeutics. He is actively involved in phase I/II clinical trials and has received intramural funding to evaluate the role of probiotics in combination with ICI. Additionally, he is leading a correlative study investigating TEM8 as a predictive biomarker in patients with high-grade neuroendocrine tumors, including SCLC, treated with oncolytic virus therapy.

Dr. Jani has contributed to national collaborative efforts such as the COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC-19) and has been recognized with early career and scholar-in-training awards for his research contributions. His long-term goal is to advance precision oncology by integrating biomarker-guided strategies and innovative immunotherapeutic approaches to improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Faith Abodunrin

Dr. Faith Abodunrin is a hematology and oncology fellow specializing in thoracic and head and neck malignancies at the University of Chicago. She completed her internal medicine training at Creighton University, Nebraska, and now provides both inpatient and outpatient care to patients with hematologic and solid tumors. Her clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of patient-centered care and global oncology, with a focus on expanding access to clinical trials across diverse international populations. Dr. Abodunrin is committed to fostering collaboration across borders to improve cancer outcomes worldwide.

Dr. Nikita Baclig

Dr. Nikita V. Baclig is a Hematology-Oncology fellow and PhD candidate in Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She will be joining the Genitourinary Oncology faculty at UCLA in July 2025.

Originally from the Chicago area, Dr. Baclig earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University. She then spent two years as a clinical research assistant with the Stanford Blood and Marrow Transplant Program before completing her MD and MPH at the University of Illinois in Chicago. She went on to train in internal medicine at the University of Washington, where she served as the Chief Resident for Quality and Safety at the VA Puget Sound.

Dr. Baclig’s academic and clinical interests center on cancer survivorship, supportive care, and the intersection of cancer and aging, particularly in patients with genitourinary malignancies. During her fellowship, she helped develop a specialized Genitourinary Survivorship Clinic under the mentorship of Drs. Alexandra Drakaki and Patricia Ganz. Her research and quality improvement efforts have spanned oncofertility, immune-related adverse events, adolescent and young adult mental health, and health economics. She looks forward to building on this work through the GRACE program, with the goal of enhancing survivorship and supportive care communication between patients and their oncology teams.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Baclig enjoys exploring the diverse Los Angeles food scene, hiking and biking, reading, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Wint Yan Aung

Wint Yan Aung, MD, is a first-year Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health. He completed his medical degree at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, followed by an internal medicine residency at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health. He is interested in lung cancer, including immunotherapy, population health, and clinical trial development.

Before entering medicine, he worked as a biostatistician—an experience that taught him to translate complex data into meaningful context. This skill now shapes his approach to patient care and education. He is especially passionate about developing tools that support shared decision-making, recognizing that the right answer depends on each patient's individual goals.

Originally from Myanmar, his path to medicine was shaped by growing up in a community with limited access to care. That experience continues to drive his commitment to advancing equity and compassionate, patient-centered care in oncology. He is excited to be part of the GRACE family and looks forward to refining his communication skills while contributing to a more inclusive, value-oriented approach to cancer care.

GRACE is pleased to introduce three amazing individuals participating in the 2024-25 GRACE Clinical Trials Experiences Storytelling Program

We are thrilled to introduce this year’s participants in the Clinical Trials Storytelling Program! Representing diverse cancer types and a range of clinical trial experiences, these incredible individuals will collaborate with GRACE to create meaningful content across multiple platforms. Through their stories, they will become established contributors, sharing their personal journeys in powerful, educational ways. We are eager to share these powerful stories and provide support to others navigating similar paths.

Virginia (Ginny) Haessly

Ginny was diagnosed with Melanoma in 2017 and became a participant in the SWOG 1404 clinical trial. Her incredible story continues to this day. She is interested in helping to advance Survivorship Care after having received immunotherapy, and continues to learn more about her continued care needs. She is a retired Retail Buyer, a wife, a mom and dog mom, and a sailor.

Catherine Wambugu

Catherine lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and is a champion, a childhood cancer advocate, and a mentor dedicated to supporting kids, teens, and young adults battling cancer. As the founder of Hope & Courage International, Catherine works to create safe spaces, provide essential resources, and amplify the voices of young cancer warriors. Her passion stems from personal experience, and she strives to bring hope and resilience to those facing life’s toughest battles.

Mike Herman

Mike Herman is a passionate cancer patient advocate, 11-year survivor of an incurable cancer, and Founder of Speaking on Cancer Patient Advocacy. As the driving force behind the High School C.A.R.E.s initiative, he is dedicated to educating the next generation on cancer prevention, early detection, and the power of advocacy. Featured in Cancer Today and a sought-after speaker, Mike collaborates with leading organizations like ACS, AACR, and NCI to push for a cancer-free future.

The Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education (GRACE; cancergrace.org) is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Howard (Jack) West in 2007. GRACE’s mission is to provide expert-mediated information directly to cancer patients and their caregivers to empower them to become direct partners in their cancer treatment.

GRACE Patient Education Ambassador Program Overview

This program is open to all oncology fellows and finishing fellows who are nominated to apply for this program by their Director and/or who apply independently of a nomination. GRACE’s designated committee will review the nominees and select up to 4 participants for the honor of participating in the 2025 program. Nominees for this program will include those still in their fellowship as well as those embarking on their post-fellowship junior faculty or practice positions; however, it is required that nominees and applicants are still a fellow at the time of the deadline, March 31, 2025.

Benefits of Participation

Selected fellows will collaborate closely with national and international leaders across various fields of oncology to develop innovative educational content for patients across a range of platforms. This engagement will empower them to emerge as influential contributors in their chosen fields of interest. They will receive training on digitally distributed content and social media, and their work will be highlighted and shared by the internationally recognized non-profit, GRACE, along with its network of established leaders in the oncology community and board members with an array of interests and connections. Participants will receive a modest stipend for compensated training in doctor to patient / family and broader field-related communication skills. These benefits will be facilitated through regular monthly virtual meetings moderated by GRACE.

Now entering the 7th year of this program, we have engaged with 26 oncology fellows, producing content in a diverse array of areas such as Community Oncology, Supportive Care, Latino Community Cancer Education, Breast Cancer Education, COVID-19 Education, Radiation Oncology, Clinical Trials Education, Hematology Oncology and Geriatric Oncology Education, to name just a few. Content produced through this program has reached tens of thousands of cancer patients and caregivers, educating and empowering them to become partners in their cancer care.

Ideal Candidates for the 2025 Program

GRACE is looking for oncology fellows and finishing fellows with a particular interest and passion for communications and patient education, and for those who are simply looking for a way to give back to the oncology community. Ideal candidates should have strong written and oral communication skills as well as a proven ability to stay abreast of the latest advances in cancer medicine.

All application forms must be submitted by March 31, 2025, for consideration. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee selection into the program. Applicants will be contacted no later than April 30, 2025 with information regarding acceptance and the next steps. The year-long program runs from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2025.

Meet the 2024 Patient Education Ambassadors!

GRACE is pleased to announce the acceptance of five rising stars into the 6th year of the GRACE Patient Education Ambassadors Program for the 2024-25 Program Year!

All five candidates have shown a genuine passion for patient education and innovation in connecting with the patient community. The program will encompass the participants creating content which will be featured on the GRACE website, working alongside GRACE faculty, Board and staff, and learning the most current and effective communication skills needed to succeed at connecting and communicating with patients in their field. The program starts July 1, 2024 and ends on June 30, 2025. We are excited to work with them over the next year to continue to educate cancer patients on the most current and emerging treatment options. Watch for new videos, articles and podcasts featuring the passions that these five amazing fellows have to share with the community!

Dr. Maria Velez Velez

Dr. Maria A. Velez is a Hematology-Oncology fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In July 2024, she will transition to a faculty position at UCLA, where her clinical specialization will include thoracic oncology and head and neck cancer.

Dr. Velez, who was born and raised in Medellin, Colombia, earned her medical degree from Universidad CES in her hometown. She subsequently underwent her training in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh followed by her fellowship at UCLA. She also received her master’s degree in clinical research at UCLA in 2023.

Dr. Velez’s research interests span from developmental therapeutics in thoracic oncology and head and neck cancer to identifying approaches in which investigators can enhance diversity and inclusion of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in clinical trials. Dr. Velez is eager to apply her training from the cancer GRACE program to create communication tools focused on enhancing understanding about participation in clinical trials, particularly for Spanish-speaking patients with limited English proficiency.

Dr. Arya Roy

Dr. Arya Mariam Roy earned her medical degree from Government Medical College, Trivandrum in India, followed by her internal medicine residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock. Currently, she is a third-year hematology and oncology fellow at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center/University at Buffalo, where she was honored with the Thomas F. Frawley, MD Research Fellowship Award for her research contributions and the Dr. Gerald Logue Memorial Award for academic excellence.

Dr. Roy actively engages in clinical and translational research at Roswell Park, focusing particularly on breast cancer. She is preparing to take on her first role as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Oncology/Hematology at The Ohio State University/The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, specializing in breast cancer. Her research interests include investigating immunotherapy in breast cancer and exploring novel combinations of therapeutic agents. Beyond her clinical interests, she is a prominent researcher in Global Oncology and cancer health disparities.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Dr. Roy enjoys gardening, traveling, and discovering new cuisines.

Dr. Guilherme Sacchi De Camargo Correia

Dr. Guilherme Sacchi de Camargo Correia is a Hematology and Oncology fellow at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

He obtained his medical degree from the University of São Paulo in São Paulo, Brazil. He then moved to the U.S. in 2019 to complete his Internal Medicine training at Mount Sinai Morningside and West. His main interest is in Thoracic Oncology, with a special focus in the role of targeted therapies in lung cancer. He is interested in helping patients obtain adequate next-generation sequencing testing for their disease to receive the most appropriate treatment. He is also passionate about medical education, especially in integrating new technologies into the learning process of medical students, residents, fellows, and patients.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, following Brazilian soccer, and connecting with his family in Brazil. In 2024/2025 he will serve as a chief fellow at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Erick Saldanha

Dr. Erick F. Saldanha is a Medical Oncologist who graduated from the A.C. Camargo Cancer Centre in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he was selected as the student orator for his oncology class. He is currently a Postdoctoral Clinical Fellow at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and is pursuing an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Saldanha's research focuses on early biomarker-driven clinical trials, precision immuno-oncology, and liquid biopsy. His dedication to the field is reflected in his achievements, including multiple research awards at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University of Toronto, such as the Department of Medicine's Douglas Wright Melanoma Fund Award and the Hold 'em for Life Fellowship Award. He has also received merit awards from prestigious international organizations like ASCO, ESMO, and FOCIS.

Beyond research, Dr. Saldanha has a strong interest in education. He actively volunteers on various early career committees and is the creator and co-host of the Late Night Oncology Show Podcast. This platform features guest experts worldwide, discussing cutting-edge data in an informative and engaging format designed to educate physicians globally. To date, it has reached listeners in up to 25 countries.

Dr. Marie Dreyer

Dr. Marie Dreyer is a second-year hematology/oncology fellow at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

She completed her medical degree at Medical College of Wisconsin followed by an Internal Medicine residency at University of Chicago where she also served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Dreyer firmly believes that effective communication and comprehensive education are central to the care and empowerment of our patients, especially as treatment options become more complex and individualized. In addition to patient education, she has special interests in clinical trial development, precision medicine, cost of cancer care, and quality improvement.
