GRACE Patient Perspectives: Clinical Trials Storytelling Program - 2025-26 - Overview

The goal of this Patient Perspectives program is to give a voice to those who have experience in participating in a clinical trial for a cancer diagnosis. By telling your story, you can educate others on the process, discuss your difficulties, and share your accomplishments. Your voice helps to educate and advocate for others who are in or who may be considering a clinical trial. This is a paid opportunity, and you will receive a stipend for your participation!

Storytelling will take the form of written, video, and/or audio/podcast to reach the largest audience. GRACE staff will coach and support participants on digital outreach and advocacy.

All people currently enrolled in, or with past enrollment in, a clinical trial for a cancer diagnosis are welcome and encouraged to apply. GRACE’s designated committee will review the nominees and select up to 3 applicants for participation in the 2025-26 program.

Who is GRACE?

The Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education (GRACE, cancerGRACE.org) is a non-profit organization founded by leading Thoracic Oncologist, Dr. Howard (Jack) West, in 2007. GRACE’s mission is to provide expert-mediated information directly to people with a cancer diagnosis and their caregivers to empower them to become direct partners in their cancer treatment. We currently produce over 300 short videos each year, reaching our community in over 190 countries.

Benefits of Participation

Applicants selected for this year’s program will work closely with GRACE staff to develop new educational content and learn new communication skills through the storytelling process.
Participants will receive training on digitally distributed content, social media, and other platforms. Participants' work will be highlighted and shared by GRACE, our network of established leaders in the oncology community, and GRACE board members with an array of interests and connections.

Participants will receive a stipend, and training in communication and media platforms.

Expectations

Participants will work with GRACE to develop program formats and production, and will present a proposal based on their experience in a clinical trial program. Participants will be expected to attend (via ZOOM) regular meetings throughout the program year to learn and to discuss their ideas. A minimum of three (3) media productions per participant will be expected by the end of the program.

Ideal Candidate

People who are navigating a cancer diagnosis, who are currently or have been involved in a clinical trial, and who have a passion for helping others and telling their stories are ideal for this program.

Applicants should have a particular interest and passion for communications, sharing experiences, storytelling, and patient education. People looking for a way to give back to the cancer community, who exhibit strong written and oral communication skills coupled with a passion for sharing experiences to educate and advocate, will thrive in this program. GRACE will guide them through boosting their voice to advocate for themselves and others in the cancer community.

2025 is our fifth year for this program, and we are excited to continue to generate a platform for patient advocacy and sharing patient education in the area of clinical trials.

The application due date is October 5, 2025. Applicants will be contacted by October 25, 2025, with information regarding acceptance and the next steps.

I joined GRACE as a caregiver for my husband who had a Pancoast tumor, NSCLC stage III in 2009. He had curative chemo/rads then it was believed he had a recurrence in the spine/oligometastasis that was radiated. He's 10 years out from treatment.

We are thrilled to introduce this year’s participants in the Clinical Trials Storytelling Program! Representing diverse cancer types and a range of clinical trial experiences, these incredible individuals will collaborate with GRACE to create meaningful content across multiple platforms. Through their stories, they will become established contributors, sharing their personal journeys in powerful, educational ways. We are eager to share these powerful stories and provide support to others navigating similar paths.

Virginia (Ginny) Haessly

Ginny was diagnosed with Melanoma in 2017 and became a participant in the SWOG 1404 clinical trial. Her incredible story continues to this day. She is interested in helping to advance Survivorship Care after having received immunotherapy, and continues to learn more about her continued care needs. She is a retired Retail Buyer, a wife, a mom and dog mom, and a sailor.

Catherine Wambugu

Catherine lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and is a champion, a childhood cancer advocate, and a mentor dedicated to supporting kids, teens, and young adults battling cancer. As the founder of Hope & Courage International, Catherine works to create safe spaces, provide essential resources, and amplify the voices of young cancer warriors. Her passion stems from personal experience, and she strives to bring hope and resilience to those facing life’s toughest battles.

Mike Herman

Mike Herman is a passionate cancer patient advocate, 11-year survivor of an incurable cancer, and Founder of Speaking on Cancer Patient Advocacy. My mom recently was told she may have cancer and I have alot of questions

My mom had her PET CT done after an xray and two CT's had seen a suspicious nodule which then became two nodules (only one suspicious). Here are the findings. We see the oncologist on the 1st but my fear is this had spread to hear brain and I dint know if they checked or not. She's been complaining of severe headaches for months now and the eye doctor said it's not because if her glaucoma. Can you please help me make sense if this report before we go in so I'm prepared and can be of better support for my mom and know what questions to ask. I've included the whole report.
Without moving the patient, 10 mCi F-18 FDG was administered
intravenously followed by PET imaging performed after a 55 minute delay. Images
were then fused and reviewed on an independent workstation. The patient's
resting blood glucose level measured 107 mg/dL
Background blood pool uptake measures 3.5 Max SUV within the descending thoracic
aorta.
The recently demonstrated 1.3 cm right middle lobe nodule demonstrates markedly
high metabolic uptake with a max SUV of 18.0 (image 165). There is no suspicious
lymphadenopathy.
No hypermetabolic activity is identified in the neck, abdomen, or pelvis. There
is no suspicious osseous lesion.
Physiologic activity is noted in the myocardium, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts. Diffuse hepatic hypoattenuation indicates steatosis. There
are numerous noninflamed colonic diverticula. There is moderate atherosclerosis.
Cholecystectomy has been performed.

IMPRESSION:
1. The recently demonstrated 1.3 cm right middle lobe nodule is markedly
hypermetabolic compatible with malignancy.
2. No additional hypermetabolic uptake on this examination.

I'm sorry your mom is going through this and I hope they find another reason for the results seen on the scans. We aren't able to read and make conclusions from scans it's illegal and unethical to make determinations like that online outside a medical appointment. It's still possible it's not cancer but those numbers make it suspicious enough to take the next step. That would be a biopsy to collect tissue to see exactly what's what. That could be through a needle biopsy where they use a needle to take samples of the nodule, or a bronchoscopy to get tissue from the nodule. If it's easily accessible a complete resection may be the right thing. It depends on lots of things that you, your mom and her onc can discuss.

I understand what you mean by needing to learn lots of very complicated stuff in a short time. You'll be a great help to her. You will find that each step along the way...if this is cancer, has many possible answers depending on lots of other things. First find out if it's cancer or not. Talk to them about the headaches, though several months may be a bit long to be having headaches from a lung cancer tumor without it becoming debilitating or deadly, again it depends and they may want to do an MRI of the brain even before the biopsy but certainly after if they do find cancer in the lung. And if they find cancer they will want to do mutation testing to ensure the proper first treatment.

Don't hesitate to ask questions as they come up. I hope hope hope this isn't cancer. My husband has gone through several scares after his initial diagnosis years ago. For over the past year, they've been trying to find out what they are seeing on scans, btw, it sounds a lot like your mom's scan. They've given up on the cancer possibility and moved on the sarcoidosis or...

Patience and Hope could take on new meaning. You're on the right track. Take a recorder to appointments most oncs don't mind. Right down questions before appointments. A second opinion only adds another head to the team. Again onc don't (shouldn't) mind.

How to Take Control of Your Healthcare Choices

I. What are advance directives?

Patients with cancer face difficult decisions when it comes to their healthcare. From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, there are many overwhelming decisions to make.

Advance directives are a powerful way to take control of healthcare choices. These documents allow you to outline preferences for medical care and specify end-of-life wishes. These documents can also be a way to appoint loved ones who you would like to help with these decisions, such as a healthcare proxy (someone to make decisions on your behalf, if you cannot). As cancer treatments can involve aggressive treatments and/or complex medical management, having advance directives ensures that your desires regarding treatment options and end-of-life care are clearly communicated.

II. What are the different types of advance directives?

Living Will: These are legal documents that address what treatments you would (or would not) want to be used to keep you alive. These can include decisions about chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. A living will can also be a way to outline your preferences about pain management and end-of-life care and can address things like:

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR): An emergency procedure using chest compression, often used with methods to give oxygen to the lungs, in the event your heart stops beating.
Mechanical ventilation: An emergency method using a breathing machine in the event you are no longer able to breathe on your own.
Dialysis: A method of removing toxins from your blood if your kidneys no longer work.
Antibiotics: Typically used in treatment of infection.
Feeding tube: A way to supply the body with nutrients and fluids through a vein or a tube placed outside of your body into your stomach.

Health Care Proxy (HCP) (or Agent): This is a person you can designate to ensure your wishes are followed, even if you yourself cannot voice them. Your proxy should know your wishes about the above interventions.

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order: Some patients with serious illnesses choose to have a DNR order in place, meaning they would not wish for CPR. They instead opt for a natural death if their heart stops beating.

Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST): Many states now have these (often brightly colored) forms that document wishes about the above interventions (CPR, mechanical ventilation, hospitalization, dialysis, etc.) as discussed between patients and their medical provider. It is always signed by a medical professional and is something to have on hand in hopes that it can be used by hospitals and first responders.

III. Why is it important for patients with cancer to have advance directives?

Maintaining control and quality of life: Patients with cancer face difficult treatment options. By expressing preferences about treatments and end-of-life care, you can ensure your wishes are respected throughout. Treatments can directly affect quality of life; being proactive in specifying treatment preferences is one way to maintain control of your cancer therapy navigation.

Providing peace of mind: For both patients and their loved ones, there is comfort with knowing your healthcare preferences are fully documented. This can alleviate anxiety and uncertainty for family members as well. By creating advance directives, you can focus more on what matters the most to you outside of your cancer diagnosis.

IV. How can you create advanced directives?

Consult with your healthcare team: Discuss your cancer diagnosis and treatment options with your oncologist and their team. Ask questions about what cancer treatments are possible, what the goals of such treatments are, and how to deal with side effects. If possible, discuss what end-of-life care might look like.
Complete documentation: Fill out the necessary forms; these may vary by state. If applicable, create a living will, HCP, DNR, and POLST.
Communicate your wishes: Share your wishes with your healthcare proxy, trusted loved ones, and healthcare providers. This can ensure that everyone involved in your care understands your preferences. These documents can often be filed within electronic medical records and displayed in highly visible areas of your home.
